Classic Kunefe Recipe

Recreate the taste of Middle Eastern cafés in your own kitchen with this classic kunefe—a warm, gooey dessert made from crispy golden kataifi dough and sweet, melty cheese. Soaked in fragrant syrup and topped with pistachios, it’s a showstopper for dinner parties, holidays, or whenever you’re craving something decadent.

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)

Kunefe:

  • 8.8 oz (250 g) shredded kataifi dough
  • 4.4 oz (125 g) unsalted mozzarella or traditional sweet cheese (like akkawi or nabulsi)
  • 1/3 cup (75 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp sugar

Syrup:

  • 1 cup (200 g) sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

🔥 Instructions

1. Make the Syrup

In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Add lemon juice and simmer for 2 more minutes. Set aside to cool completely.

2. Prep the Kataifi

Gently separate and shred the kataifi dough with your hands. Mix it in a bowl with the melted butter and sugar until fully coated.

3. Layer the Kunefe

In a buttered nonstick pan, press half the kataifi mixture evenly across the bottom. Add a layer of cheese. Cover with the remaining kataifi and press down gently to form a flat top.

4. Cook

Cook on low to medium heat for 5–7 minutes per side, flipping once, until both sides are golden and crisp. (Use a plate to help flip if needed.)

5. Sweeten and Serve

Pour the cooled syrup over the hot kunefe right away. Let it soak in for a minute, then garnish with crushed pistachios and serve warm.
